However, choosing between electric and diesel vehicles is no easy decision. Both have a lot to offer and are, of course, accompanied by their respective limitations.
When it comes to large, practical vans, there is no denying that Fiat know what they’re doing. Having battled it out with other commercial giants for years, the Fiat Ducato range still stands strong against competitors. Now, the all-electric E-Ducato has joined the ranks.
Both the diesel and electric versions of the Ducato boast a multitude of great features and practical additions, so choosing between the two can be tricky.

Engines and Spec
First up, let’s take a closer look at the engine, power and specifications of these impressive vehicles, starting with the diesel model. The newest versions of the Ducato are kitted out with 2.2-litre diesel engines, offering a choice between 120, 140, 160 and 180 hp outputs. What’s more, these engines are all fully compliant with Euro 6D-Final regulations, so clean air zones are no problem.
For those on the hunt for a van that is truly practical, the Ducato Luton could be the ideal choice. With over-cab storage and easy loading access, this vehicle is perfect for removals, equipment transport and large goods deliveries. Regarding payload, the Ducato Luton is a class-leading van, with a maximum capacity in excess of 2000kg on certain models. This high payload, combined with the newer Euro 6 engine range, makes the Ducato an excellent choice for those seeking practicality and increased efficiency.
So, how does this van’s all-electric sibling compare? As is the case with the original Ducato Luton, the electric variant is an ideal choice for individuals on the hunt for practicality, reliability and power. Though the E-Ducato range features multiple trims, body types and vehicle lengths, they are all powered by a 90kWh electric motor, with a choice of either 47kWh or 79kWh batteries. In simple terms, this translates to around 122bhp and 280 Nm of torque, perfect for short trips, back-and-forth removals and urban navigation. However, with a top speed of around 60mph, the E-Ducato is not ideal for long trips on fast roads; the diesel model would be a better choice for this style of driving.
Regarding payload, the E-Ducato is seriously impressive. Of course, the exact figure differs depending on body length and trim, but it is worth noting that the top end boasts a whopping 1,885kg capacity. This, combined with easy loading and unloading via the rear doors and the classic over-cab Luton storage, makes the E-Ducato a very attractive choice.
Interior
Stepping inside the cabs of these vans, it’s a seriously close call; both diesel and electric models are kitted with a range of well-considered features and share many of the same characteristics.
The cab of the diesel Ducato Luton boasts an abundance of storage options, with large bins below the centre console, large door pockets and dash-top cubbies. The practicality doesn’t end there, though. Those looking to work on the go will be pleased to discover that the centre backrest folds down to double as a desk.
Regarding tech, the Ducato now boasts a flashy infotainment system, with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display, smartphone connectivity and satellite navigation included on every model aside from base spec.
When it comes to the E-Ducato’s interior, it is not too dissimilar from the regular Ducato, though there are a few differences worth noting. The E-Ducato’s instrument panel has been adjusted to incorporate important information such as battery charge and range but is otherwise the same as the regular diesel model. Where the E-Ducato does vary, however, is the addition of a small ‘Mopar Connect’ screen above the driver’s side dashboard.
Both the Ducato and E-Ducato feature durable designs and practical approaches, ideal for heavy use, long days on the road and mobile office capabilities.
The Verdict
So, which should you choose? We’re sure you’ve guessed that there is no straight answer to this question. Both the Fiat Ducato Luton and its all-electric equivalent are impressive vehicles, boasting a range of practical features, over-cab storage and class-leading payloads.
In terms of long journeys and faster driving, the diesel Ducato Luton might be a better choice. However, the low running costs of the E-Ducato Luton, combined with the smooth ride of the electric motor make it an equally attractive option for those doing shorter routes and navigating urban environments.
