A firm favourite of the construction industry, the Tipper variant of the commercial van is the ideal choice for the easy loading and unloading of goods. With an open body and large cargo hold, a Tipper van can easily tip loads of over 1000kg out, perfect for those who need to quickly and easily move large amounts of materials.
The following review pits the electric vehicle offerings of a truck specialist, MAN, versus a company that is better known for its luxury cars, Mercedes Benz, to compare which offers the best product. However, when it comes to commercial vehicles, it’s worth putting assumptions aside because, as you will see in this review, both brands put engines, spec and design at the forefront of their electric Tipper vehicle offerings.

Engines and Spec
With its large cargo length of 3,320mm by 2,040mm, the Mercedes-Benz Tipper is considered one of the most adaptable vans on the market. It is not only incredibly reliable and efficient but can also be trusted to keep its passengers and payload safe and secure. When it comes to the MAN’s payload, as the batteries are all stored under the floor, the internal capacity of the eTGE is exactly the same as the diesel engine version, an impressive 2,515kg.
With a tipper van, it is very unlikely that you will be travelling long distances, which is just as well, as neither the Mercedes nor the MAN has a particularly large range compared to other vehicles on the market. The Mercedes Benz Tipper has two battery options, 41 or 55 kWh with an electric traction output of 85 kW and a range of 100km, whereas the MAN has one smaller 36 kWh battery with a larger range of 114 km from full charge.
Both vehicles boast decent charging times. The MAN can be fully charged in a respectable five and a half hours. However, the Mercedes has a rapid charge time, reaching 80% in just two hours as standard and 30 minutes when using the fast charging option.
Interior
If you’re looking for top storage capabilities,look no further than the MAN eTGE Tipper.. There are a plethora of storage compartments and lockers throughout the van’s cab and some hidden lockers as well for your valuables and tools.
On the other hand, the interior of the Mercedes-Benz is all about comfort. With a double cab option and a single cab option available, comfortable seating is on offer to up to six passengers meaning you can transport a whole crew if needed.. The vehicle also has the option of silent cab experience, with the engine producing hardly any noise at all.
Both have an infotainment system built in,, featuring a helpful geocoded map system, voice control and more. Like many electric vehicles, the specially designed controls will helpfully display battery level and range instead of fuel levels.
The Verdict
Choosing between the two electric Tipper vehicles is tricky as both have considerable benefits. Neither vehicle benefits from a particularly long range from full charge but for most jobs this is unlikely to cause an issue. Those looking for a large cargo load might prefer the Mercedes-Benz Tipper as it has significant cargo length. Similarly, the MAN eTGE boasts a very impressive payload which could sway potential TIpper owners who would benefit from this feature. Either way, you’ll end up with a great van.
